چکیده

Leader election and initialization are two fundamental problems in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The leader can serve as a coordinator in the MANETs and the initialization protocol can assign each host a sequential, unique, and short IDž. Q1 As we know, nož research on initialization for IEEE Q2 802.11-based MANETs has been done. Here, we propose two contention-based leader election and initialization protocols for IEEE 802.11-based single-hop MANETs. We also provide an efficient approach to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocols, such that the performance can be evaluated in polynomial time. The evaluation results provide a guideline to set the size of the contention window and thus improve the performance of the proposed leader election and initialization protocols. The results can also be used as a guideline to set the size of the contention window for any contention-based protocol. Simulation results justify that the evaluation results provide a good guideline to set the size of the contention window. Copyright  2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Randomized Initialization Protocols for Ad Hoc Networks

ÐAd hoc networks are self-organizing entities that are deployed on demand in support of various events including collaborative computing, multimedia classroom, disaster-relief, search-and-rescue, interactive mission planning, and law enforcement operations. One of the fundamental tasks that have to be addressed when setting up an ad hoc network (AHN, for short) is initialization. This involves ...

Leader Election Modes of the Service Distribution Protocol for Ad Hoc Networks

Ad hoc networks are characterized by high dynamics in particular with respect to the formation of network partitions. This behavior makes it difficult to (s)elect a suitable leader for a given network partition at any given time. However, such leaders or representatives are needed by many protocols for ad hoc networks. In this paper, we will illustrate the leader election process and its influe...

Design and Analysis of a Leader Election Algorithm for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Leader election is a very important problem, not only in wired networks, but in mobile, ad hoc networks as well. Existing solutions to leader election do not handle frequent topology changes and dynamic nature of mobile networks. In this paper, we present a leader election algorithm that is highly adaptive to arbitrary (possibly concurrent) topological changes and is therefore well-suited for u...

Density Based Topology Control for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

The design of an efficient and effective protocol for topology control in mobile ad hoc networks is a challenging task. In this paper, we present a brief review of protocols reported in the literature and propose a protocol for topology control in mobile ad hoc networks. Our protocol relys on leader election and density based clustering. A problem that may occur in cluster based topology contro...
